Episode 10 - Why Agents Should Have a CEO Mindset with Jennifer Myers

Are you running your real estate business, or is it running you?

At some point, every successful agent hits a turning point—the moment where working harder isn’t the answer anymore. That’s when the real question emerges: Are you ready to step into the role of business owner, or will you stay stuck in the endless hustle?

In the latest episode of the Happy Agent Podcast, I sat down with my longtime friend Jennifer Myers, founder of Agent Grad School and a seasoned real estate coach, to talk about what it really takes to shift from just selling houses to running a true business.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by transactions, struggled to scale, or wondered what’s next in your real estate career, this episode is for you.

Why Most Agents Don’t See Themselves as Business Owners

Jennifer and I both started in real estate thinking it was just about selling homes. But the reality? Being an agent means being an entrepreneur.

Jennifer shared how, in the beginning, she didn’t even consider herself a business owner—until a wake-up call from her CPA made her realize she had to take her finances seriously. For me, it was hitting a wall where I either had to scale my business or sacrifice my personal life.

The shift came when we both realized:
✅ Success in real estate isn’t just about working harder; it’s about working smarter
✅ The key to long-term growth is systems, delegation, and financial planning
✅ If you don’t take your business seriously, you’ll always feel stuck

How to Stop “Winging It” and Start Running a Business

The biggest difference between an agent and a CEO? Systems.

Here’s what separates real estate agents who stay in the grind from those who build a scalable business:

1. Have a Repeatable System

If your business relies on luck, referrals that “just happen,” or inconsistent lead generation, it’s not a business—it’s a hustle. The moment you create a system that consistently brings in business, everything changes.

2. Manage Your Money Like a CEO

Jennifer and I talked about the financial wake-up calls we had—like getting a surprise tax bill we weren’t prepared for. One major mindset shift? The money your business makes is not your personal money. You have to budget, plan for taxes, and treat your income like a real company would.

3. Delegate the Right Way

Most agents think that growing means starting a team or brokerage, but that’s not true. Some of the most successful agents stay solo and scale by outsourcing the right tasks—like admin, marketing, and showings—so they can focus on what they do best.

You Don’t Have to Start a Team or Brokerage to Grow

A huge myth in real estate is that the only way to scale is by building a team or brokerage. But that’s not for everyone. You can be a solo agent and still have a business that runs like a well-oiled machine.

The key is figuring out:
✔ What’s your long-term vision?
✔ What parts of the business drain you, and what do you love?
✔ What’s the most profitable way for you to work?

If you love working directly with clients, you don’t have to give that up to grow. The right systems and delegation can help you scale while staying in your zone of genius.
